What's gonna happen when Brett Favre breaks Marino's all time TD record? Will the game come to a complete stop so he can make a speech? Will his family run out onto the field with hugs all around? Will SportsCenter dedicate 90% of that day's show to replaying The Pass?

Hells no!

Why not?
Because people give a shit about the games. No one cares about baseball. ESPN spent all morning showing clip(s) from the Giants game, but I couldn't tell you who won. If MLB replaced it's entire regular season with a series of home run derbies, would anyone care? Would anyone notice?

(Will Donald Driver be escorted off of the field by a brigade of police officers? :))

1. No record in ANY sport compares to the record he just broke
2. Baseball is much easier to pause and restart compared to football.
3. Baseball is the only thing on right now, so therefore ESPN has nothing else to show on sportscenter

As much as I am a hater of the game of baseball, football found it necessary to put the game between the Cowboys and Seahawks on hold the day Emmitt Smith broke Walter Payton's all-time rushing record.

But I am with you on being able to do without the endless coverage of the home run. But we knew that was coming. Hopefully it won't last much longer and we can move on tomorrow.

I think plenty of records compare to the record Bonds just broke. He just broke the sexiest of all sports records.

I agree. I'm not exactly a Pete Rose fan, but over 4,200 hits is a pretty big deal, a record of longevity not likely to be broken anytime soon. It's pretty important. But it's not nearly as sexy as home runs.

I'm glad it's finally over with. It's like the Peyton Manning of sports records; I'm sick to death of the sight of it. Tired of hearing about it. Now it's done and ESPN can shut up.

Speaking of Manning. I'm right here on your left.

And that's all I've ever argued Larry. It is the most well-known, most coveted, and most romantic sports record in the history of American sports. I never said it was the best. A homerun always delivers compared to Marcus Allen getting 1 yard touchdown runs handed to him on the Chiefs in the 90's. The ball always has to at least travel a fairly long distance.

Oh... no kidding? Well shut my mouth.

There's a direct relation between the distance a ball travels and the excitement it generates? I'm going to look at golf in a whole new light now.

I don't get it... I just don't get it. How can the "sexiest" of all records be so boring. If I wanna see balls fly I'll <insert joke here>

Oh well. This was just an excuse to say "baseball sucks".

Football has 8-minute commercials every couple of plays and that's not for the injuries and flags you deal with while watching a game. I love football, but there's too many stops.

Home runs aren't as exciting as an amazing defensive play imo. How bout a catcher getting his ass railed over by someone like Jim Thome? That's pretty exciting. He could get a concussion. Isn't that great? That's what America wants right? Violence.

Umm...I lost track. I like both though. And baseball has more to offer than home runs.

PS- If "SportsCenter" is your guide to decide what is important in a game, I feel sorry for you. I can barely stand that show anymore unless Kenny Mayne is on. Slam dunks, home runs and big hits, that's all it is. Not that I don't like any of those, but they miss the big moments sometimes.

Yeah... right on. That's twice I've been nailed in this thread. It's just always on when I get up in the morning, when I come home for lunch, and when I get off work in the evening. Just... so... easy! What else am I supposed to do? Not watch TV? :)

Baseball doesn't even need commercials or injuries for stops. The entire game is just a strung together series of stops. I got me one of those white noise machines to help me sleep. It has 3 options: Rainforest, Oceanside, and Baseball game.

Haha, it sounds like your cure might be to just not watch baseball.

SportsCenter has some good stuff still but when it's an hour show and you're having a 5-minute segment on what Posh Spice and David Beckham are wearing at the ESPYs, and need to cover both baseball and preseason football, some things are gonna get overlooked. I know it serves a purpose but still they're just gonna highlight the big hit and not the key pitching change the manager made in the 8th. But then that's why I like Baseball Tonight.

BTW, preseason football has been on the past couple nights on prime time TV. NBC carried a preseason game between the Chargers and Seahawks...thank God because everyone cares about the backup QBs on those two teams.

And when I watch Monday night games this year, I'm gonna have to turn down the volume because I can't think of anything worse than having to listen to Ron Jaworski for three hours. He's worse than Michael Irvin.

I disagree,

Ron Jaworski is a welcome change in the booth as a part of the Monday Night broadcast over Joe Theisman. I was thrilled to hear Joe Theisman was not going to be calling games anymore.

I'm sure I will tire of Jaworski and his constant jabbering especially since Tony Kornheiser is still doing the Monday Night games. Those two are buddies as proven by their interaction on PTI and I'm sure it will get out of control as the season goes along.

One thing that did irritate me last night during the game was the fact that they appear that they are going to continue with the interviews in the booth during the game. I couldn't stand those last year.

Joe Theismann has claimed he was told he would not be coming back because he was talking about football when they got ack from break. If that's true, expect MNF to be worse with Jaws because, as Larry alluded to, Tony and him are friends. This could get uglier.

Give me Brad Nessler, Dick Vermeil, and Jaws. Then you got something.

I don't, actually. I just like hating!

I'm backwards. I enjoy watching the backups more than the starters. The 4th stringers are the ones that have to put on a show. They're the ones overly excited and flying around like maniacs. Always moving at full speed and frequently confused. It's awesome.

No kidding! How DARE they make me dislike Jerry Rice! Most of the time there isn't a football game going on right the f*ck in front of you. Why not wait until Tuesday to ask Jerry how he likes being called "The Greatest"? Shut up, Jerry. I'd rather watch Dilfer fall down again.

The best football broadcast team after Summerall/Madden was the ESPN Sunday night team a couple years ago...Mike Patrick (maybe?), some funny bald guy and Theisman. They were a great team and they weren't obnoxious. But then they also talked about the actual game all the time, which apparently is frowned upon...which is pathetic. I don't give a sh** about ratings though and outside of David Letterman or Bono making a guest appearance in the booth, I don't care which stars are there either haha.

Did you every really watch that announce team call a game? They were terrible, especially towards the end. The bald guy you were talking about was Paul Maguire and he and Theisman used to bicker and argue like children all the time during the game, THAT was obnoxious.

I did enjoy Mike Patrick as a play-by-play announcer for them, but those two idiots were awful and it is because of that, that I have such a disdain for Joe Theisman now.

Of course I watched them, why else would I say they were the best? Maguire (thank you) and Theisman would argue about FOOTBALL things ala Pardon the Interruption (the best sports talk show on TV), it was entertaining. I liked Sunday Night games WAY better than Monday night games for awhile. BTW, Dennis Miller had to be the worst one maybe, I forgot about him.

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are an outstanding team right now. And I could listen to anything Brad Nessler is doing, he's good.

Joe Buck is a horrible football PBP announcer. Way too many extreme opinions and he thinks he's way smarter than he really is. I can't stand listening to him doing a football game. World Series? sure.

Aikman's done a nice job in his role.
