Give Him Six! This Week In College Football

A little trivia quiz to kick off the season. If you like this, I'll try to invent some questions for future weeks. Answers are at the end. (Don't peek).

1. The Georgia Tech-Notre Dame series has had a few historic encounters. The first meeting between these teams marked what occasion? The last time GT travelled to South Bend marked another famous occasion. What were they?

2. Illinois is ranked #1 in what current national ranking of college football teams?

3. Iowa plays at Northern Illinois at Soldier Field, Chicago. What was the last college game played at Soldier Field?

4. Clemson plays FSU in the 9th Bowden Bowl matching Bobby Bowden of FSU against Tommy Bowden of Clemson. Who has won this matchup 3 of the last 4 years?

5. What former NFL QB begins his major college head coaching career this weekend?

6. What first-time head coach is facing his first-ever experience being responsible for game planning, having never served as an offensive or defensive coordinator at any level?

Answers
1. The first GT-Notre Dame game in 1922 marked the debut of the
Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. Coached by Knute Rockne , the Four Horsemen backfield consisted of Don Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley and Harry Stuhldreher.
The last time GT went to South Bend, in 1975, Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger made his memorable sack on the the game's final play in the final home game of his senior year. Ruettiger, a 5-foot-6, 165-pound walk-on and defensive end (yes, THAT Rudy) sacked Georgia Tech quarterback Rudy Allen on the game's final play. Joe Montana was the Irish quarterback.

2. The Fulmer Cup, a ranking of college football teams based on arrests during the offseason. The season starts Thursday, so the Cup is officially awarded on Wednesday. Teams accumulate 1 point for a misdemeanor charge and 3 points for a felony charge. Illinois finished the offseason ranked #1 with 25 points. For a rundown of the Fulmer Cup, see http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/?cat=97

3. Mississippi Valley State vs. Arkansas Pine Bluff, September 3, 2005.

4. Tommy has beaten his old man 3 out of the last 4, but he still hasn't made up for the old man winning the first 4. Bobby leads the series 5-3.

5. New Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh is a former QB for the Bears and Colts.

6.Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster has coached at the collegiate and pro levels for 21 years, but has been mostly a tight ends coach. He was a recruiting coordinator in college many years ago. But he has never been a coordinator anywhere.

I already bought my Stanford hat for another 1-11 season. Jim Harbaugh was one of my favorite players of all-time going back to his days at Michigan. I wish he would have amounted to more with the Bears, but was glad to have him on the Colts and get us so damn close to a trip to the Superbowl.

Maybe Ron Zook isn't a boob afterall.

I was a huge Montana fan so that's a nice bit of trivia. I never would have made that connection.
